Going back to New York can be a little bittersweet for me. So many places that I used to go to, like the Stoned Crow and the Mars Bar are gone now and there’s many more and the list gets longer with each visit.
There is one place still standing though and that’s the Waverly Diner on 6th Avenue. It’s a true, old-school diner that’s been standing tall on the corner of 6th and Waverly Place since 1979!
I thought it would be the perfect place in New York City to sample a grilled cheese sandwich and so away we go!
Here we are at the Waverly Diner! It’s not far from where I lived on 16th Street and I’d come here at least once a week.
Always a treat to see this place still standing!
As you can see, lots of old school booths to sit at in here.
I met my friend Dorothy here for a late lunch and it was great to see her and catch up on things!
There’s the menu, although I already knew what I wanted, a New York City grilled cheese sandwich, diner style!
There’s a bar in the back for single diners that don’t want to take up a booth.
Check out the classic New York black and white cookie!
Here’s a shot from the back of the diner.
This is just a small sampling of the press the Waverly Diner has gotten through the decades it’s been open.
Meanwhile, back at our booth, the delectable diner food has arrived!
Dorothy got a tuna melt with coleslaw an a pickle! It looks delicious and she loved it!
There’s the star of the show, this week’s grilled cheese sandwich!
They had several choices of cheese and I got provolone and cheddar and I also got bacon on it. It looks simply fantastic! Let’s dig in!
This was such a tasty grilled cheese sandwich.
The two cheese blend was a creamy and rich delight and the bacon added a nice smokiness to the mix. It was grilled to perfection and a wonderful diner version of a grilled cheese sandwich!
Ivy was sitting next to us and was entertained by a story I was telling so we invited her to join the conversation. It was great to meet her and wonderful to see Dorothy and hang out at the Waverly Diner!
