Last week was the 50th anniversary of the release of the album, Blue by Joni Mitchell. It was released on June 22, 1971 and it’s become known as one of the greatest albums of all time.
It was entirely written and produced by Joni Mitchell with spare instrumentation on the songs. It’s mainly Joni Mitchell singing and accompanying herself on piano, guitar and Appalachian Dulcimer.
The only other musicians on the album are James Taylor playing guitar on four songs, Stephen Stills playing guitar and bass on another, Russ Kunkel playing drums on three tunes and Sneaky Pete Kleinow playing pedal steel guitar on two of the songs.
While the genre of “singer/songwriter” was already born when the album was released, Blue defined that genre.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of this legendary album, I’ve got six links to online articles about Blue and one video from a documentary featuring Joni Mitchell playing music and talking about the album.
Then of course there’s the MBIP Coming Attractions for what’s happening next week on the blog!
