This week’s sandwich of Peoria is from my year-long sandwich tour back in June of 2017 and it’s actually a Sandwich of Pekin. Sadly it happened at a diner that’s not in business anymore. Andy’s Diner had been in business in Pekin, Illinois since the early ’50’s. It closed its doors in 2018 and you can read about the closing here.
It was one of the last stops on the tour and it was a really good sandwich. So now, let’s go back in time, when Andy’s Diner was still open for business in Pekin, Illinois.
My friend Bob Gordon from ACME Comics joined me for this sandwich lunch back in the summer of 2017 and he drove us to Pekin.
There’s Andy’s Diner, it was a real throwback, old-school diner and I wonder what’s there now? I’ll have to go check it out down the road.
They had some interesting sandwiches on the menu and I decided to try the Andy’s Steak Sandwich, which they described as a take on the Philly Classic.
What really intrigued me was that it was served on jalapeño toast. That sounded interesting and tasty!
Here’s our server Jamie serving up our sandwiches with a pretty smile!
Bob got the tenderloin and fries and said it was a delicious and tasty sandwich.
As noted in the menu, this sandwich is their version of the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. It has thin slices of seasoned steak, melted Provolone cheese and grilled onions. The bread is buttered and toasted and it looks fantastic!
This was definitely one of my favorite sandwiches on the tour!
The steak was tender, seasoned and so flavorful! The cheese added a richness to the sandwich and the grilled onions complimented it perfectly.
I noted in the original review that the thing that really took it over the top for me was the jalapeño toast! It added a spicy flavor and it was toasted and buttery. A delicious creation for sure!
They had a lot of memorabilia in their and I got a kick out of this Nixon coming to Pekin headline in the paper that I did my first freelance writing for! I wonder if he was bringing his Tin Soldiers with him?
