A mini tour of chicken and waffles is still in progress as we continue on with the 25th week of the MBIP 13 month chicken eating tour. To recap, the first two were at EatandEvolve and then last week at Childers Eatery, both of these are located at Junction City. I recently found out that Obed & Isaac’s have a chicken and waffles entree, so this tour within a tour is expanding to three weeks!
Last week Childer’s tied with EatandEvolve, keep on scrolling to see how Obed & Isaac’s compares to these two Junction City eateries!
Here we are at Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery and Eatery. This is a massive building here in downtown Peoria. The building was built in 1889 and was originally a Presbyterian church and then later it became The Cornerstone Building. It has landmark status and it’s an impressive looking structure! There’s a beer garden in the back of the building, but we’ll wait till it’s warmer outside to visit that area.
Right now, let’s get inside out of this cold weather that it seems is never going to end. They preserved the look of the original church from 1989 and it’s certainly a majestic atmosphere in here!
It’s the middle of the afternoon, so I have the bar all to myself, I love it! And there’s Bear the bartender. I’ve met hundreds of bartenders doing blogs the last nine years and I swear that Bear is one of the best! He’s friendly, quick with a drink and I had a nice conversation with him about Peoria, New York and the media. You can follow Bear at facebook and Instagram!
I love the newspaper styled menu here at Obed & Isaac’s and ding, ding ding, there it is—chicken ‘n’ waffles! I placed my order with Bear and then grabbed the MBIP Camera for a few photos in here while the meal is being prepared.
They have their own microbrewery here on the premises and here’s the taps that their in-house beer flows from.
I love the stained glass in here and the fact that they preserved the ornate church design within the building.
There’s a comfortable seating area over here and a dining table behind it with an impressive skylight above it.
This is the library room in the back that you can rent out for a private party.
Meanwhile back at the bar, Bear is serving up our midday lunch! Wow, these chicken ‘n’ waffles look impressive, but one thing is missing...there’s no bacon on them! Oh well, let’s keep moving along here, but they’re going to get dinged for the lack of piggy meat on this dish!
They do get points for the coffee bourbon butter that’s made in-house. Okay time to pour some of the maple whiskey syrup on the waffles and start sampling and see how they stack up against the other two chicken ‘n’ waffles that we’ve had so far!
I thought I’d try a bite of the chicken and waffles separately first and I have to say that both are first rate! The chicken is a lightly breaded thigh and the breading is nicely seasoned and crispy and it’s tasty and juicy inside. The waffle is soft and doughy and the syrup and butter are borderline decadent. Time to combine these two components!
Wow, this is so delicious! Sweet meets savory in such a tasty combination! The soft and rich waffle compliments this piece of crunchy chicken perfectly. Even getting dinged for no bacon, I have to say that this mini chicken ‘n’ waffles tour has just hit a three way tie! You really should sample all three and here’s the links to the other two: EatandEvolve and Childers Eatery.
After lunch, Bear introduced me to Erica on the left, who’s part of the wait staff and Jennifer on the right who’s the General Manager here. Thanks to all three for the wonderful hospitality and a delicious chicken ‘n’ waffles entree!
Chicken Rating
Four Dixie Chickens: Houston, we have a three-way chicken ‘n’ waffles tie! Jennifer told me that you can order a side order of bacon with this delicious dish and I’m definitely trying that the next time!
