Last night I went to the Macabre Masquerade Ball which was hosted and performed by the Lock And Key Sideshow troupe at Peoria Pizza Works and it was really a cool show and a fun evening. Photos from that show will be up tomorrow but watching the show made me think about one of my favorite places in New York and that’s Coney Island. So I’ve got six Coney Island links below (the first is a comprehensive history of Coney Island, the second is a photo history and the other four are posts from my different blogs on trips I took to Coney Island from 2010 to 2013.) Below that are the MBIP Coming Attractions complete with a photo from last night’s show!
The Comprehensive History of Coney Island - This is a wonderful collection of history and links to other sources about Coney Island.
Then & Now: 50 Years Of Coney Island Amusements In Photos - This is an interesting feature article. It’s got archival photos of Coney Island by photographer Abe Feinstein and recent photos of the same spots by his granddaughter Elise Feinman. It also includes an interesting interview of Elise interviewing her grandtather about Coney Island.
A Guy Walks Into 365 Bars - Day 253—Sunday, September 19th, 2010 - Ruby’s Coney Island Bar - A post from my 253rd bar on my 365 bar journey from 2010! There’s a lot of shots of Ruby’s Bar, which is now the last remnant of the old-school Coney Island on the boardwalk. There’s also photos of me wandering around and I’ve got a photo of Cha-Cha’s bar and Shoot The Freak and sadly both of those attractions are long gone. I feel lucky I got to hang out in Coney Island while it still had the old-time feel to it. Like everything, it’s a lot more gentrified and cleaned up today.
Chillmaster Coney Island Road Tri[p - The Chillmaster was a character I got to know who lived in the East Village and loved to blare classic soul music from his apartment while sipping on beer and Hennessy. We had several dance parties at his place—here’s a link to the first one and talked him into joining us for a road trip to Coney Island. It was a crazy day and a fun evening!
Joan Jett At Coney Island - In August of 2012, Joan Jett played a free concert at Coney Island and I went with my friend, “The Duncester” and we had a blast. Little did I know back then that this would be my last trip to Coney Island while living in New York. About a month after this show I decided to move back to Peoria, Illinois and start a new chapter in my life.
Hello It’s Me... - Here’s some photos of Coney Island from a 2013 trip I took to New York after moving back to Peoria. The photos are in the middle of the post. This is the last time I went back there, I’m kind of scared to go again because each time I go it changes more and not for the better. Oh well, I guess that’s just the way of the world. I’m really thankful for some of my Coney Island memories from the ‘90’s, they were some of the best times I’ve ever had and I’m grateful I got to experience the place back in the day.
We’ve got a big week coming up next week here on MBIP! Tomorrow I’ve got photos from the Macabre Masquerade Ball presented by the Lock And Key Sideshow at Peoria Pizza Works. It was a great show and I’ll put up the highlights from it plus a delicious sandwich I had for my Saturday night dinner! Tuesday we start a brand new food tour! It’s seven months of steak and tune in on Tuesday to see where the first week happens from! If you’re a fan of the old Jumer’s cinnamon rolls, you need to check out Wednesday’s post and that’s all I’m saying about that for now! Thursday we’ll feature videos and I still need to figure out what I’m going to feature on that day. Since this is the third week of the month, there’s going to be a Thirsty Third Friday post and I’ll have photos from the Peoria Zoo’s “Zoo Brew and Wine Too” party that’s happening this Thursday evening. Okay, I’ve got to go sift through the 433 photos I took last night and pick the one’s for tomorrow’s post. Have a beautiful Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
