Live From Peoria, Illinois, it’s Saturday Night starring this week’s host, The Fish House with special guest stars, Sam and Paul and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. And now, please welcome this week’s host, The Fish House!
Here we are at The Fish House and we’re starting a new feature here on the Saturday Night out posts this week. Once a month, I’m going to be featuring an item at a local restaurant that is one of my personal favorites and this week we’re featuring the dinner rolls at The Fish House, which are like warm orbs dropped from some heavenly sphere hovering above us and our feeble existences. You can read more about them as you scroll on down this post...
But first, we have to get inside, so let’s head on in!
I love the wood paneled corridor as you first step inside of The Fish House. The dining room is to the right, but let’s enter stage left, which heads straight into the bar/lounge room, which is always nice and dark! And there’s two of my favorite people at The Fish House, Sam and Paul, the friendly and fun bartenders on duty!
Here’s some photos from my vantage point at the bar. The taps are a little far away for me to get a shot, so I’ve reluctantly surrendered the MBIP Camera to Paul to start this section of today’s post called...
Bartender Cam!
Paul took these shots behind the bar of the taps, Sam in action and the corner that used to house a vintage cash register. The cash register is gone now...sob!
Paul took the camera back to the kitchen and got some shots of the ever-popular dinner rolls here at The Fish House before they get plopped into a basket and served to the hungry diners here. Okay, I’m getting antsy without the MBIP Camera in my control, so that’s the end of this Bartender Cam edition, thanks Paul! Now give me my camera back!
In addition to the dinner rolls, I’ve put in an order with Sam for an appetizer, so while that’s being prepared let’s take a little walk around in here. This is the lounge area behind the bar and I had to take a picture of my favorite corner in here. That table always has a calming effect on me...now let’s keep moving along before I take a nap underneath it!
Here’s the dining room, it’s getting near closing time, so it’s fairly empty in here and the perfect time for a photo!
Meanwhile, back at the bar, there’s Paul showing me some photos from his visit to Galesburg and flying in the Stearman planes there. Stay tuned for his post on that coming up this Saturday!
While Paul is goofing off showing me photos on his phone, Sam is actually working behind the bar and here she is with our appetizer for the evening! I got the Seared Tuna appetizer and the presentation of this dish is wonderful with the tuna slices fanned out and a nice splattering of wasabi in front of them. The tuna is marinated and coated with spiced sesame seeds and seared on the outside and it’s so tender it melts in your mouth. The wasabi adds heat and spice and this is such a tasty appetizer! And I love the way Sam’s hair matches the appetizer!
Paul must’ve heard me talking about him, because here he is getting back to work! He’s delivering a basket of the famous Fish House dinner rolls. They come wrapped up in a basket, just like a Christmas present waiting to be opened! And when you open it up, you find you’re presented with a basket of heaven on earth!
The dinner rolls here are homemade every night and they are so flaky and fun to eat! You can read more about them below, but as far as i’m concerned these are definitely the best dinner rolls in Peoria and beyond! They’re always a great start to a fabulous dinner here at The Fish House!
When I finished eating, I looked down the bar and saw a few new arrivals sitting there. That’s Chase and Sarah in the second picture and Paul told me he considers Sarah the MVP of The Fish House. He said she’s responsible for multiple duties every night and does a great job! And last, but certainly not least is the owner of The Fish House, Justin! Justin told me that they’ve been using the same recipe for the dinner rolls for over 40 years now, a perfect example of: “If it ain't broke, don’t fix it!” Thanks to Sam and Paul for the great service and hospitality and to everyone at The Fish House for another wonderful and fun Saturday night there!
Once a month in my Saturday restaurant travels I’m going to be spotlighting an item from a restaurant around Peoria I consider to be the best in the area. I chose The Fish House dinner rolls for this maiden voyage because while so many people enjoy them, I think we all take them for granted and they deserve a moment in the spotlight! These rolls are made and baked daily and are always so fresh, warm and flaky. It’s always a wonderful way to start dinner here as the warm and toasty-baked rolls come out while you’re enjoying a drink and perusing the menu. They’re slightly crisp on the outside and as you bite into one of the odd shaped orbs of delight, it’s like munching on a warm and fuzzy memory that makes you feel good all over. These rolls are true comfort food and the perfect beginning for what’s always a fantastic meal at The Fish House. And you can get the dinner rolls to go and bake them at home. Justin, the owner of The Fish House said that people come in droves during the holidays to get bags of these for their festive dinners. If you’ve never had the dinner rolls at The Fish House, it’s a unique Peoria taste that you need to experience. Then order the Seared Tuna appetizer, it’s delicious!
