Live from Peoria, Illinois, it’s Saturday Night BBQ starring the Country Club BBQ and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. And now, from the deep in the heart of Farmington Road please welcome this week’s host, Country Club BBQ!
We are off and rolling on a Saturday night! The other week I went to the newest bar on Farmington Road, Country Club BBQ and had some specialty drinks and checked the place out. Well tonight we’re going to go and sample some of the Southern-styled BBQ food there. Which is a good thing because I’m starvin’ like you know who!
Here we are at the Country Club BBQ, as you can see from the packed parking lot this is a popular place already..
Let’s go in and see what’s happening on the inside!
This is Eric who’s working the door, Eric told me he’s been working here since back in the days when it was known as Cam’s Place. He told me the crowds have been decent in here and it’s a nice crew of people showing up and enjoying the food, drinks and country flavor of the nightclub.
Here’s a hand carved wooden cowboy standing attention in the corner of the front room. Eric told me that more than one person has mentioned that it looks like Walter White in full Heisenberg mode and I agree! He is the one who knocks!
There’s the front bar where we enjoyed some specialty drinks just about a week ago. This week we’ll stick to our old standby, Budweiser, the King of beers!
Here’s the band stage which is opposite the bar. It’s all set up and in a little bit the popular local band, Poplar St. will be taking the stage. I’ve heard good things about them and am looking forward to seeing them live. Till then, check out their facecrack page.
Just as I’m heading back to the bar I run into the two owners of Country Club BBQ, Sean and Clay, two nice guys and hospitable hosts. Time to put one of them to work.
And Sean is the one elected to put our dinner together for the evening, I’m anxious to see what he’s got planned, let’s go in the kitchen and see what’s cooking.
Shawn told me he’s going to cook up a deep-fried wrap from the Country Club menu that was inspired by the deep-fried grilled cheese we had when we had a Saturday night dinner at Kenny’s back in July. I’m licking my chops already!
Here’s Sean shoveling some fresh, crispy homemade cole slaw on the wrap. The wrap itself is jalapeno cheddar flavored, sounds good already!
Next some smoked brisket and pulled pork is added. You wouldn’t believe how good it smells back here!
That’s a wrap, but it’s not over yet...
Batter up and then...
It’s time for the drop...
Into the deep fry pool, look at that beauty swimming in the fryer and turning golden brown!
And through the magic of the internet, dinner is completed and served up by Sean.
How amazing does this meal look?
And they have not one, not two, but four homemade BBQ sauces to drizzle on your food. Sean said they’re all made with ingredients from behind the bar. I’m going to try the Dark Ale & Mustard sauce. Time to dig in!
The digging has begun and i truly am digging it in more ways than one!
This BBQ Slaw Wrap is beyond amazing! Such a combination of flavors and textures and the Dark Ale & Mustard BBQ sauce takes it over the top! You can read more about it in the review below.
The mac ‘n cheese is crazy good as is the corn bread which was the other side that Sean picked out for me. This was an amazing meal and I’m looking forward to more Southern-styled meals here at Country Club BBQ!
That was a lot of tasty food, but it sure disappeared fast!
Okay, dinner is over and Poplar St. has taken the stage, let’s go check them out.
They sound great and have a lively and fun stage presence.
The crowd is loving the band and it’s a wonderful show! Sean and Clay told me that there’s going to be live music every weekend here, so check out the facecrack page to see who’s playing this week.
Here’s a shot from the back bar.
This is John who sent me an email a week ago saying that he enjoys the MBIP blog and said he was going to be in Peoria this weekend. He's from Michigan and was in town visiting his mother-in-law and asked me to recommend some decent places to eat. So I told him he should check out Kenny's Westside Pub and told him I'd be at Country Club BBQ on Saturday and he should stop by and say hi. And he did and here he is!
John and I got a beer and went back to the beer garden in the back and had a nice chat about Peoria and blogging. This is one of the things I love about doing the blog, I get to meet so many cool people that I never would've met if I wasn't doing this. Of course while our conversation was going on, I still needed to be taking pictures. No rest for the wicked!
The band of the evening, Poplar St. were taking a break and I got a chance to talk with them and snap their photo. They're from Creve Coeur and they are from left to right: Tim Chapai, Mallory Coons, Denver Watters and Tony Ahten. you can find out where they're playing next on their facecrack page.
On the way out I ran into Sean who was with Jen who came all the way from Chicago to hang out at Country Club BBQ and show off her Torch fanny pack. A great end to a wonderful night of food, friends beer, music and fun! We'll see you all tomorrow!
My Meal
I had the co-owner of the Country Club, Sean Kenny pick out my first meal at Country Club BBQ. Sean created all of the recipes for the dishes on the menu. What he picked out for me was a wrap that is unlike anything you’ll ever find in Peoria and probably beyond. I had the BBQ Slaw Wrap which is a jalapeno cheese wrap stuffed with their homemade cole slaw, smoked brisket and pork and then it’s battered and deep fried.
I can’t describe how wonderful and tasty this wrap is. It’s crunchy on the outside and inside you have the smoky, savory goodness of the tender brisket and pork that’s intermingling with the crispy cool coleslaw. To top it off, add one or more of the homemade BBQ sauce and it’s like something you’ve never had in your life. It’s an explosion of flavor and textures and I highly recommend it. For the sides Sean chose the mac ‘n cheese and an order of corn bread. I love mac ‘n cheese and this is some of the best I’ve ever had. The pasta is drenched in a creamy rich Queso cheese sauce that has jalapeno and pepper bacon infused in the sauce. The bacon, which has won awards for Raber’s Meats takes it over the top and it is so good. Usually I’m not a huge fan of corn bread, but like everything Sean does, he takes corn bread to a new dimension by adding lots of butter and a sweet flavor to the bread, really delicious! I’m definitely returning to sample more items off of the menu, so stay tuned!
