Looking Backwards - The Thursday Post From the 365 Bars Blog! - A Guy Walks Back Into 19 Bars - This Week: February 17, 2010 - Pete’s Tavern - Bar 38

by MBIP

Okay, the new and revised book is starting to take shape and I’ve got the outline all done and I can work in some sections from the original idea into the new one that will focus on my blog, A Guy Walks Into 365 Bars, that will have it’s 15th anniversary next year.

The first couple chapters are going to be about the beginning of my writing career and moving to New York and the bulk of the book will be about me returning to the city and going back to 19 of the bars I visited back when I was doing the blog. I’m going to have a website to accompany the book as well.

What I’ve been doing here is putting up a weekly list of the 19 bars I plan on returning to in October. We’re up to the fourth bar and that bar is none other than, Pete’s Tavern, one of the longest standing bars in New York City. It opened up in 1864 and it made it through the Prohibition years disguised as a flower shop!

Below are the photos from the original post from over 15 years ago, the original captions and a link to the original post from the blog. And yes, I used the word “original” three times in one sentence, so I think I deserve a prize of some sort! Don Pardo, what did I win?

Oh wait, Don Pardo’s dead…never mind. Enjoy this week’s blast from my bar past!

Here we are at the legendary Pete's Tavern.

Mike the bartender pours me a cold Budweiser before I even sit down in the barstool. Cheers!

Seated next to me were two stunning blondes, Mia and Julie. Naturally I asked to take their picture. They said okay and then Tom, sitting at a table behind us offered to take a photo of the three of us. Who was I to decline?

Kegs of Pete's 1864 Ale hang over the doorway.

Just a few of the many beers on tap at Pete's Tavern.

Author O. Henry wrote The Gift of the Magi right here in Pete's Tavern...
