We’re heading over to East Peoria for this week’s grilled cheese sandwich and this is our 19th stop on this cheesy tour! Only four more after this and we’ll have done our 23 grilled cheese run!
But we have a little something special today before we hit the road, we’ve got a little birthday celebration that’s going to happen out on the MBIP World Headquarters Balcony, so let’s get out there and let this celebration begin!
There’s the birthday boy, MBIP Pal and Wheelman, Scott Turley!
He’s opening up his presents which include: A Johnny Rotten birthday card, a vintage Wimpy Hamburger Book, candy cigarettes, a silly pair of socks, P-Town drinking materials and a golden star from Caterpillar for all the years of service Scott put in there!
Happy 39th birthday Scott!
Now let’s go get this week’s grilled cheese sandwich!
This week Scott drove us to East Peoria and we’re going to sample a grilled cheese at the Storm Shelter At Eastport.
A familiar face met Scott at the door and we’ll introduce that familiar face soon. Keep on scrolling!
Scott made his way to the end of the wooden bar and we checked out the menu and saw they have a special section just for their, “Breezy Grilled Cheesy” sandwiches. They have a selection of toppings and a half dozen varieties of cheese to choose from.
And remember that familiar face I mentioned? That would be Carmele who’s looking pretty behind the bar and she was featured in a blog post from seven years ago when we Scott and I went to Kuchie’s on the Water and were joined by our friends, Amber and Joe.
I can’t believe that was seven years ago and it’s great to see Carmele again!
After we caught up, she took our grilled cheese and appetizer order and I think I’ll wander around and take a few photos…hey, it’s what I do!
There’s a shot of the front of the bar along with the beers on tap. Check out the “Elvis Juice.” I’ll have to try that next time!
There’s a dining area behind the bar with tables and chairs.
There’s gaming machines discreetly tucked away in the corner opposite the bar.
There’s also another dining area in this room behind the bar. It’s a lot bigger in here than it looks from the outside!
Speaking of outside, here’s their massive deck area and the view of the Illinois River is amazing out here!
Meanwhile, back at the bar, Carmele serves up our appetizer, an order of Buffalo Chicken Wings.
These were some of the best chicken wings I’ve ever had and if you follow this blog, you know I’ve eaten my fair share of wings through the years.
They were flavorful and so tender and juicy, we’re off to a great start here!
And now it’s time for the star of the show, the grilled cheese sandwich!
Scott got a tomato and bacon grilled cheese and there he goes taking the famous “Turley Bite” out of the sandwich.
He said it was delicious and the fries were just as tasty.
I got a side of Cole slaw with my grilled cheese and it was a nice side dish. It was crispy and tart with just a hint of sweetness coming through.
Now on to the main course!
I got the grilled cheese with cheddar cheese, a fried egg and bacon, kind of a breakfast version of a grilled cheese!
This is the first time we’ve had an egg on the grilled cheese and it added a nice layer of flavor!
All the grilled cheese sandwiches are served up on grilled, buttery Texas Toast and the bacon is a smoky and savory addition!
This was a wonderful and delicious grilled cheese sandwich!
After we finished our sandwiches, the kitchen crew responsible for the wonderful and tasty food came out to say hi and I got a picture of them!
Thanks for the delicious food, you all did a fantastic job today!

CHEESY RATING
(4 Slice Rating System)
They definitely have a superior grilled cheese selection here and the fact that you can pick and choose your cheese and toppings definitely gives them some extra points.
I’m giving them the top-rating of four slices of cheese for their wonderful grilled cheese sandwich!
Thanks to Carmele and the entire kitchen staff for a fun and delicious afternoon at the Storm Shelter!
And thanks to Scott for driving, happy birthday, Scott!
