For years I’ve been fearful that The Nut House would close up shop.
When this blog was just a little over a month old, way back in January of 2013, I did my first blog post on The Nut House and you can read that by clicking here. Back then it was owned by Debbie Jackson and she told me she was looking to sell it to someone that wanted to keep it just like it is and keep the name The Nut; House.
Debbie was patient and after four years, she found someone to buy The Nut House, Jane Scott. Jane already had a mobile business featuring fudge, nuts and candy called Jane’s Sweet Addictions (it’s currently doing business out at Northwoods Mall and various local events) and she purchased The Nut House to keep that sweet spirit alive in downtown Peoria. I did a post on that in the summer of 2017 and here’s the link to that post.
I think things were rolling along nicely for Jane and The Nut House and then 2020 happened. The Pandemic arrived and everything shut down, including The Nut House. Jane put up a nice post on facecrack and said they would leave the lights on as a glimmer of hope for the future of small businesses. I thought that was such a nice sentiment to put out there, so I went and took a picture of it.
The pandemic really took its toll on small businesses and I felt real bad for The Nut House. Even when they re-opened, it was rough because most people were still working from home and downtown Peoria was empty. So I went and bought 100 bucks worth of nuts to try and encourage people to support The Nut House and other small locally-owned businesses in Peoria.
But I think things finally caught up with The Nut House and Jane announced that this Friday, May 27th is the last day that they’re going to be open. Jane’s looking for a new owner, so if anyone wants to buy The Nut House I can guarantee you plenty of free publicity here at MBIP!
Okay, let’s take a trip to The Nut House while it’s still open.
There’s The Nut House, a sweet Peoria tradition for over 100 years.
Sadly, the doors will be locked and shut on Friday, May 27th.
Let’s go in and pay our last respects to this historical Peoria landmark.
It always smells divine in here.
I always love that this place is divided into a sweet side on the left and a salty side on the right.
Let’s start this final tour with a glimpse of the salty side.
This place lives up to the title of The Nut House by having the biggest selection of nuts in Peoria!
And they’re roasted in-house! That’s completely nuts!
There’s also fresh, buttered popcorn in the back on the salty side of the aisle.
Here’s the sweet side of The Nut House with a wide array of sweet treats on these upper shelves.
More sweet treats await you in the cabinets below.
In the middle of the store is an island of sweet chocolate treats.
I love these photos of downtown Peoria from back in the day. Check out the photo of The Nut House back in 1959!
Sadly, this may be the last time I touch the scale in The Nut House.
I got a box of candy to go as I was leaving.
Is this my last malted milk ball from The Nut House? I hope not.
Jane Scott would love to sell this business to someone who has the time and money to keep a sweet downtown Peoria tradition alive on Main Street.
You have a few days left to go pay your respects to an historical downtown Peoria business.
Long live The Nut House!
