Okay, it’s onto the second week of eating from our Goldbelly Taste of New York box.
This week is something I’m really looking forward and that’s Gray’s Papaya Hot Dogs!
When I first moved to New York, I lived in a tiny apartment in The Beacon Hotel, this is when they had residential apartments and the place was a budget hotel on the corner of 75th and Broadway. They’ve since fixed it up and got rid of the residential apartments.
Well three blocks away on the corner of 72nd and Broadway is the infamous Gray’s Papaya hot dog stand. It’s open 24 hours, seven days a week and many nights after work, at three, four or five in the morning, I’d go to Gray’s and get a hot dog with mustard and marvel at the freaks in there at that time of night!
Here’s a Marty After Dark post on going to Gray’s Papaya in March of 2011.
They cook them on a flat stove-top at Gray’s…
So I tried to mimic that style by cooking mine in a buttered pan. They’re looking good!
Buns were included in the package and there’s the Gray’s Papaya dogs in the hot dog rolls. They just need one important ingredient…
I never touch the ketchup at Gray’s, but I always add some Sabrett’s Spicy Brown Mustard.
And a bottle of this spicy mustard was included in the box!
They also sent sauerkraut and onions, but I wisely ignored those offerings and stuck to the spicy brown mustard.
I added a liberal dose of the spicy brown mustard to my Gray’s Papaya hot dogs.
Okay, here’s a picture I took years ago of a Gray’s Papaya hot dog in New York City…
And here’s the Peoria version along with some barbecue potato chips. Let’s dig in and have a bite of this famous New York City hot dog!
Wow, this is a delicious hot dog and it takes me back to the corner of 72nd and Broadway!
I’m hoping to return to New York this spring and I’ll definitely be stopping at Gray’s Papaya.
This was such a tasty New York treat right here in Peoria!
Sadly, since the last post I ate all of the Junior’s Cheesecake. Hey, it was impossible to save it for this post. Especially after a few late night drinks!
For dessert, here’s a picture of a donut from a post I did from another favorite New York City place, The Donut Pub. Hopefully that will still be there when I return to New York City this spring!
