So last week I got this comment on my facecrack page from Kipling:
I was intrigued by this idea and decided to try it out for this week’s grilled cheese.
By the way, we’re in our 10th week of grilled cheeses, double digits, baby!
I decided to pull out a King’s Hawaiian Roll from my frozen bread collection for this sandwich. I thought the sweet bread would compliment the maple syrup nicely.
Okay, while the roll thaws out, let’s go and get the other ingredients for this week’s syrupy sandwich!
This was quite the pleasant surprise! I thought the MBIP Mobile would be covered with snow, but it’s not, I don’t have to clear it off at all!
But it’s still colder than fuck-all out here and I still fucking hate winter. HATE, HATE, HATE IT!
Here’s the ingredients for this week’s grilled cheese sandwich, clockwise from left: A cup of Cheez-It crackers, Yancey’s Fancy Buffalo Wing Hot Sauce Cheddar, Culinaria Maple Syrup and Edy’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream.
Okay…let’s cook!
I’ve sliced the cheese and made a little appetizer out of the Cheez-It crackers and the sliced cheese.
It was delicious!
Kipling didn’t give me much direction in the making of this sauced-up grilled cheese sandwich, but he did suggest using a salty cheese to offset the sweetness of the maple syrup.
This Buffalo Wing cheese is salty and hot, so it’ll make a nice balance of sweet and heat for the grilled sandwich.
To further add to the heat versus sweet element, I’ve added some Cholula hot sauce to the melted butter in this hot pan and added the slices of the roll face down to grill the inside of them first.
I’ve added three slices of the salty and spicy cheese, pressed them down and placed the other buttered slice slice on top and pressed it down with the aid of this handy spatula.
Now we flip it…flip it good!
The sandwich has a nice color and I think the cheese has melted properly.
There it is plated up and for an appetizer, we’ll have some more Cheez-It’s and cheese. This is really a tasty snack!
Now for the moment of truth, time to apply the maple syrup to the grilled cheese sandwich. I have to admit being a little apprehensive here.
Pouring maple syrup on a spicy grilled cheese sandwich seems a little weird, but here we go!
There you have it, a Sweet Heat Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
Kipling suggested we eat it with a knife and fork, so just like Jackie Gleason…awaaay we go!
Wow, just fucking wow! This is absolutely delicious!
The syrup is sweet and compliments the spicy melted cheese so well! They really blend together in a heat meets sweet treat!
The grilled Hawaiian roll is a nice housing for the sandwich and I’m going to experiment more with this maple syrup meets grilled cheese recipe!
Kipling said to give all of the credit to his stepmom and here she is reading to the young Kipling (top right) and I’m guessing that’s his brother in past pre-pandemic times.
Thanks for this wonderful suggestion, Kipling and cheers to the memory of your sweet stepmom!
Speaking of sweet, for dessert I got a mini cup of Edy’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream.
I let it get all melty, shmooshed it up and it was the perfect ending to this wonderful grilled cheese lunch!
