Every day on my way to work I drive past Peoria’s newest Mexican restaurant, Macho Taco. They’ve been working on it for a while and it’s mainly been open just on weekends.
I heard that they’re opening up during the week now, so I thought it was perfect timing to stop by and check it out on our third week of this Mexican food tour. And so that’s exactly what we’re going to do! So there!
I parked in the Peoria Library parking lot and walked down the alley to Main Street. There it is in the distance and I took a shot as I got on the sidewalk on Main Street.
Let’s go in and see what’s happening in here!
Wow, it’s really nice in here and I love all of the art on the walls! I checked out the menu and…
Bruce, who’s one of the owners took my order. Bruce confirmed that they are indeed open five days a week now.
The hours are: Tuesday through Thursday: 11am to 9pm and Friday and Saturday they’re open from 11am all the way to 5am.
If you’re craving a late night Mexican weekend feast in Peoria, this is the only place to go!
There’s lots of seating in here, wooden bars surround the kitchen area and line the walls.
There’s also large, wooden communal tables up front and that’s where I decided to sit. I put my stuff over there and then walked around to take some photos of the place.
The menu on the wall and all of the art in here was done by local artist, Devin McGlone, who has decorated many bars and restaurants in the area with his unique chalk art.
Check out the Mexicutioner on the menu, that’s a food challenge to eat a super spicy hot burrito in twenty minutes without taking a drink. If you can do this you get your picture on the Wall of Flame and a ten dollar gift card.
Here’s the trio of men who have conquered the challenge and are pictured on the Wall of Flame! Do you have anything to add here, Paris?
There’s a Salsa Bar in the back and you can pose for your own wrestling photo back here like Bruce and I did.
The theme in here is Lucha Libre which translates to “freestyle wrestling,” and this sport was introduced to Mexico in the early 20th century.
This is Peoria’s only Lucha Libra styled restaurant and in addition to art commemorating this sport…
They also sell genuine Lucha Libre “Luchador” masks made especially for Macho Taco. Very cool!
I headed back to the table just as my three course Mexican meal was being delivered, perfect timing!
I started off with the Queso Fundido and chips.
This is a mixture of spicy melted cheese and ground beef and it was delicious! In addition to the spice the cheese was rich and the savory ground beef complimented it well on the warm homemade tortilla chips.
The name of the place is Macho Taco, so of course I had to order a taco, but this wasn’t your standard run of the mill taco at all! This was one of their specialty tacos, the Taco Libre.
It consists of chorizo sausage, whole kernel corn, crema, cheese and Mexican spices. This was such a tasty taco!
The chorizo sausage was spicy and the corn, cheese and crema added levels of tasty deliciousness!
For the third and final course, I ordered a steak burrito and this is one giant burrito! It’s a meal unto itself!
Housed within the warm tortilla are tasty and juicy chunks of steak, rice, pico de Gallo, crema, fresh guacamole and cheese. You can get beans if you want, but I wisely told them not to add them!
This was a delicious burrito and I have to confess, I couldn’t eat all of it, I had it the next day for lunch and it was just as satisfying and tasty warmed up!
Bruce told me that they’re going to be painting this back room soon. I love the Lucha Libre pooch on the curtain back here!

Four Pepe Tacos—The food here is authentic and delicious and I love the unique atmosphere and art in Macho Taco. They’re now open Tuesday through Saturday and it’s the only after-hours Mexican restaurant on the weekends in Peoria, so go and check out Macho Taco this week!
