The other day while looking around on facecrack I happened to notice that my friend Shannon had this photo as her cover photo:
That cracked me up because that was one of my favorite awnings in New York City.
I lived just a few blocks from that store and used to walk past it all the time and I took a photo of it years ago and it’s been a fixture on the MBIP coffee table for well over a decade now.
Here it is at the MBIP World Headquarters:
The store was a wacky-ass place owned by a Chinese couple that sold everything from knock-off perfume to batteries to cheap jewelry.
It’s definitely one of the best awnings ever in New York City and I’m glad I took a photo of it back in the day.
I can’t remember when I took this photo, but I’m guessing it was sometime in the late ‘90’s.
My niece Mary Beth made the frame for the photo by the way. Thanks Mary Beth!
Here’s a blog post I wrote about Funny Cry Happy on my Marty After Dark blog back on November 18, 2011.
Today for the hell of it, I Googled “Funny Cry Happy” and found this CD from 2001 that’s titled, “Funny Cry Happy Gift” by Tiffany Anders that came out in 2001.
It was recorded in Brooklyn, New York, so you know she got the title from that awning. I hope she gave them credit!
Here’s yet another CD I found by Pete Diamond with the same title and this one features the awning in the background.
This came out in 2000 and I’m guessing they Photoshopped the word “Gift” on the banner because it was long gone by then.
I also found this movie from 2003 called, “Cry Funny Happy” which I bet was inspired from that awning.
I never realized how influential that kooky little store on 14th Street was!
Sadly it’s long gone from New York City, but at least it lives on in the interwebs and on the MBIP Coffee Table in the MBIP World Headquarters!
Have a funny cry happy Friday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
