2010-2019 My Personal Highlights
2010 -2011 - A Guy Walks Into 365 Bars - I started this blog at the very beginning of the decade and the idea was to go to a different bar every day for 365 days in a row and document my adventures with photos and text. If I missed a day, I’d have to start it all over. Three months into the blog and the NY Daily News published a feature on it, the U.P.I Wire Service put it on an international wire and it fucking exploded! The story got picked up by newspapers, websites and blogs all over the world and it really helped establish me as a known blogger from New York. I was even on TV in Australia! I finished the blog in 365 days at Mike’s Tavern right here in Peoria, Illinois. I was exhausted so I took a month off and started plotting my next blogging adventure.
2011 - 2012 - Marty After Dark - This blog wasn’t going to be as intense as the 365 bars blog. I still intended to update it daily, but if I missed a day it wouldn’t be a big deal. The idea behind this was that all of the posts would happen at night after dark in New York City. A few of my favorite posts from this blog include: The Joey Ramone Birthday Bash, Easter Sunday at Mars Bar and an evening at The Distinguished Wakamba Cocktail Lounge, one of the sketchiest bars in NYC back then!
2012 - Tripping With Marty - I started this blog after I had lost my job in New York and hoped that maybe I could make living from people sending in contributions. That didn’t happen, but the blog was popular and I had fun doing it. Some of my favorite posts from this blog include: The John Lennon Walking Tour, The Bronx Zoo, Kings Highway Cinema and Anthony Pisano and His House of Treasures. I couldn’t find another job and ended up really depressed that year. Then it dawned on me…maybe I could move back to Peoria, get some stupid job and maybe create a popular blog in Peoria. I announced it on TWM and moved back to Peoria on October 18, 2012.
2012 - 2019 - Meanwhile, Back In Peoria… - I got a job my second day back in Peoria and started putting my new blog together and thinking up ideas for it. On December 10th, 2012 I published the very first post and was scared out of my wits that no one was going to read it. The first week of a blog it will almost always get a lot of hits, but the true tale is in the months that follow. I’m happy to say that in the first year, the blog got a very nice following and it’s grown ever since. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for over seven years now! I want to thank everyone who reads it and follows along. It’s really made for a good time back here in Peoria and I thank all of you for reading and being a part of it.
2018 - 2019 - The Marty Monologues - Now this is some thing that I never thought I’d do. A friend of mine suggested that I do a monologue show over twelve years ago and my immediate response was: “You’re out of your fucking mind!” But she kept persisting and told me I’d be real good at it and on September 30th, 2018, I performed the first Marty Monologues at the Apollo Theatre with live music by Sarah Marie Dillard and Brandon Mooberry and DJ juanGoblin spinning tunes before the show and in between the stories. Since then I’ve done three more shows and they’ve all gone over really well. I’m still terrified to do them, but thanks to all of you who have come to the shows and those of you who have helped with the behind the scenes work. The full thank you list can be seen here at this one year anniversary post at facecrack.
And now, let’s see what 2020 brings us!
Monday: It’s a festival of live music on Monday! On Saturday afternoon I attended the monthly Uke Jam Peoria at the Rhythm Kitchen and then Saturday night I enjoyed a trifecta of live bands at The Red Barn!
Tuesday: We conclude our 13 month chicken tour by having dinner at the restaurant that served up my favorite non-fried chicken dinner. Tune in to see who got this fowl honor!
Wednesday: Photos from Jimmy’s Bar, where I’ll be ringing in the New Year in the afternoon and then going home to hide for the rest of the evening.
Thursday: Thursday Minute Marty Meals returns after a brief hiatus. This week I’ll be cooking up Cheesy BBQ Chicken Balls and Nutty Teriyaki Rice!
Friday: We continue eating the entire McDonald’s menu and this week I’m sampling the Quarter Pounder family. I feel sick already!
Saturday: We’ll be spotlighting another Peoria sandwich on the weekly Sandwiches of Peoria!
Okay, I have to get to work on all of this, enjoy the last Sunday of this decade!
