We’re in the middle of a three day Memorial Day holiday weekend, so I thought I’d post six links to another long weekend, John Lennon’s infamous "Lost Weekend."
In 1973, John Lennon’s marriage to Yoko Ono was crumbling and with Yoko's blessing he took off to L.A. with their personal assistant, May Pang and that was the start of his 18-month “Lost Weekend.” He and Pang started hanging out with Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr and Alice Cooper among others and John Lennon started drinking and doing drugs like they were going out of style. There’s lots of stories from this wild time in his life and below are a half a dozen of them. And then there’s the weekly MBIP Coming Attractions as to what’s happening on the blog this week.
John Lennon’s Infamous ‘Lost Weekend’ Revisited - A timeline of the 18 months which includes getting thrown out of the Troubador nightclub with Harry Nilsson, producing Nilsson’s “Pussy Cats” album, a jam session with Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder and ultimately reuniting with Yoko Ono.
'My lost weekend with Lennon': May Pang breaks her silence over their relationship - May Pang tells her side of the story and also talks about her photos featured in her book, Instamatic Karma.
"Walls and Bridges"—John Lennon’s Lost Weekend Album - A song by song review of the album Lennon recorded during the Lost Weekend. The album contained the song, “Whatever Gets You Through The Night,” which was the only number one record of his solo career.
John Lennon's Pee-Themed Letter to Phil Spector Up for Auction - An infamous letter from John Lennon to Phil Spector he wrote during this time period literally filled with piss and vinegar but mainly piss.
Pussy Cats Mini-Documentary - This is a great little six minute documentary about Harry Nilsson’s album, “Pussy Cats,” that John Lennon produced in the Lost Weekend time frame.
What John Lennon Found During His ‘Lost Weekend’ - A recap of what happened and how it all ended. Five years later none of it would matter much.
Last night I went to the new Edge restaurant in Peoria Heights and had a most memorable meal in their elegant new restaurant and also had a drink in the swanky upstairs Executive Lounge. So it’s perfect that I’ll be posting that tomorrow on Memorial Day! Tuesday we’re having a palate cleanser at Susie’s Hot Dogs in Morton with MBIP pal and Wheelman, Scott Turley and I’ll be announcing the new upcoming MBIP food tour! Wednesday will feature a trip to Peoria’s Salt Cave and then a stop at Cracked Pepper to balance things out. Thursday will be some photos of Sully’s Pub for the Places In Peoria feature and then it’s on to Fast Food Friday. Saturday will be the second post in the new Saturday Suggestions series and then it’ll be Sunday again. Round and round we go! Have a fun-filled hollerday weekend and we’ll see you tomorrow on Memorial Day!
