A couple of weeks ago former Charles Manson family member, Leslie Van Houten was granted parole after serving 48 years in jail for the murder of Rosemary LaBianca. She admitted to stabbing LaBianca in the back at least 14 times with a bayonet and then using her blood to write messages on the walls of the house with other Manson family members. While reading about her parole hearing it made me think about the Beach Boys connection to the Manson family and I’ve always found that subject fascinating. I’ve got six links to articles about the Beach Boys connection to Manson and his “family” below. And then there’s the MBIP Coming Attractions for next week, so there!
Short Bits 2: Charles Manson and the Beach Boys - This article tells the story of how The Beach Boys came to record a song written by Charles Manson, although they credited it to Dennis Wilson after they gave Manson a small cash payment for it.
Charlie Don’t Surf: Charles Manson Meets The Beach Boys - This story wins the prize for the best “Beach Boys Meet Charles Manson” headline!
7 Famous People Who Crossed Paths with Charles Manson and His Cult - The Beach Boys weren’t the only famous people to hobnob with Manson, other celebrity connections, including Neil Young, record producer Terry Melcher and oddly enough, Angela Lansbury’s daughter.
Mark Dillon: Dennis Wilson and Charles Manson - This article tells how the Tate-LaBianca murders should’ve actually been the murder of record producer Terry Melcher and Candice Bergen, his girlfriend at the time.
Remember the time Charles Manson yelled at a Beach Boy in the shower? Mike Love does - Of course Mike Love used the Manson/Beach Boys connection to sell copies of his book last year. I don’t know who’s creepier, Mike Love or Charles Manson.
The Artie Lange Show - Al Jardine Interview - This is a great interview with Al Jardine, a founding member of the Beach Boys by Artie Lange and he talks about the Manson connection at 10:00 minutes into the interview.
I visited two of the oldest businesses on Main Street last night. I had my Saturday Night Dinner at Judge’s Chamber and then walked down the street to the Apollo Theatre where I saw a fabulous show. California Style Fitness Studio put on a pole dancing show called, “A Night At The Movies.” It was their 2017 Showcase event and it featured instructors and students performing pole dancing scenes dedicated to the movies. It was really entertaining and I’ve got a ton of photos from it to put up tomorrow. Tuesday ends the ten week ice cream tour and it took place at an iconic Peoria place for ice cream and other treats. Wednesday I’m going to visit the giant Abraham Lincoln sculpture at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and also have a Lincoln styled lunch afterwards. Thursday I’m going to feature some videos from a legendary Peoria TV program. I’m taking Friday and Saturday off to work on the book project and I’m also hoping to finish up my oral history of The Coachmen, which I’m really excited about! Okay, I have to go sift through my photos from last night, I took 698 of them and have to whittle them down to about 75 for the post, yikes! Have a beautiful Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
