I’ve always been a big fan of The Monkees. People who claim they weren’t a “real” band or didn’t play their own instruments never listened to a copy of Headquarters or saw them out on tour. Their TV show was pure genius at the time and it still plays well today proving that rock ‘n roll and comedy are timeless. John Lennon once likened them to the Marx Brothers and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. My favorite Monkee always was Michael Nesmith. He had an interesting story before he joined the band, had one during and had many more after the band broke up in 1971. Hopefully all these stories can be read in his autobiography that’s going to be released on April 18th called, “Infinite Tuesday: An Autobiographical Riff.” A compilation CD of his musical works, both solo and with The Monkees will be released four days earlier. And yes, I’ve pre-ordered them both! So in the spirit of this upcoming Michaelmania, there’s six Michael Nesmith links below for your clicking perusal. Below that (in more ways than one) is what you can look forward to in this upcoming week of MBIP Posts.
Michael Nesmith: The Closest The Monkees Ever Got to Cool - A nice essay on why indeed Michael Nesmith is the coolest Monkee in the rock 'n roll zoo.
Q&A: Michael Nesmith on Solo Tour and Being the 'Difficult Monkee' - A question and answer article in Rolling Stone from three years ago that ends with this wonderful quote about how Nesmith eyes the future: “I will need to get some better shoes.” Ha ha ha!
The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz on the Mike Nesmith hit that got away: ‘One of the best songs he ever wrote’ - Mickey Dolenz talks about the Nesmith song, “Different Drum,” and calls it one of Nesmith’s best that was a hit for Linda Ronstadt and not The Monkees. I agree with his sentiments.
Michael Nesmith’s IMDb page - A nice list of his credits, accomplishments and quotes. It’s all here, folks!
Mike Nesmith's Ten Greatest Monkees Songs - Number four is my favorite!
Michael Nesmith of the Monkees Releasing ‘Infinite Tuesday: An Autobiographical Riff’ Book, Companion CD - An article about the upcoming book and the track listing for the CD. I can’t wait for both!
Last night i went to Brasky’s Bar & Grill and not only had an amazing cheeseburger, I saw a fantastic band, Highway J and also hung out with some friends I haven’t seen since...well, just a couple of weeks ago! Or was it months? Only this post knows for sure! Tuesday we continue our year-long quest of sampling sandwiches in and around Peoria and this week’s between the bread journey takes us to Peoria Pizza Works, with special guest star, Terry Grawey! Wednesday is going to be a journey to a place I’ve always hated, but will soon meet head on and that place is...Taco Tuesday! I have an idea for what I’m going to do Thursday, but I haven’t cleared it yet, so I’m not going to say what it is. And Friday will be a post from a birthday party at an iconic Peoria neighborhood tavern. So there you have it and now, as usual, I have to get to work on all of this stuff, so have a funny, sunny and runny Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
