All of the news about Michael Flynn pleading guilty on Friday brought out a lot of comparisons between the Trump-Russia story and the Nixon-Watergate time in history. I was obsessed by Watergate when it was going on and it was really something to watch Nixon slowly go from “I Am Not A Crook!” to “I quit.” I’ve put up six Watergate related links below and then there’s the MBIP Coming Attractions and it was all done without any collusion with Russians. I promise!
The Watergate Story - This timeline tells the whole story. November 17th, 1973: Nixon angrily proclaims on TV that he is “not a crook!” August 8th, 1974: Nixon resigns.
Woodward and Bernstein: 40 years after Watergate, Nixon was far worse than we thought - This sums it all up: “At its most virulent, Watergate was a brazen and daring assault, led by Nixon himself, against the heart of American democracy: the Constitution, our system of free elections, the rule of law.” Sounds similar to another news story happening right now!
How Mark Felt Became ‘Deep Throat’ - Bob Woodward details how he came to know and get facts for the Watergate stories he wrote with Carl Bernstein from Mark Felt, known for decades as, “Deep Throat.”
John Dean helped bring down Richard Nixon. Now he thinks Donald Trump is even worse - An interesting interview with John Dean, a key figure in the Watergate trials whose testimony brought Nixon down.
Michael Flynn could be the John Dean of Donald Trump's Russia scandal: Why his guilty plea is an earthquake - Michael Flynn is the new John Dean and this Daily News opinion piece details the facts.
He Was a Crook - The last link today is Hunter S. Thompson’s scathing obituary of the man who was brought down by Watergate, Richard M. Nixon. These are my favorite lines from the obituary: “He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. His body should have been burned in a trash bin.” I only wish he was around to write about how Trump gets thrown out of an office he had no sensible right to occupy in the first place.
Last night I went to The Fox Pub with my friend Ben A.K.A. B Löwd and we had the final meal in our 13 month vegetarian series. It was a great meatless meal and you can read all about that tomorrow and stay tuned for next month when Ben eats meat to finish this series off! Tuesday is our eighth week in our seven months of steak tour and it takes place downtown with a steak sandwich from the last food truck serving up food near Main Street. Wednesday is a road trip that I took with MBIP pal Scott Turley to the last Mr. Donut in America! Thursday will be another random Peoria person for our People of Peoria series and Friday we’re going to be sampling more fast food for the Fast Food Friday series. So that’s what's coming up, now I’m going to start putting all of that together! Have a funny Sunday and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
