When you think of food selections at a Mexican restaurant, steak doesn’t immediately pop into your brain, but when it comes to Los Jimadores, it should! I think they have the biggest selection of steak dinners of any Mexican restaurant in and around Peoria. So let’s go and sample one of them on our sixth week of the seven month steak tour. Los Jimadores is just up the street from MBIP World Headquarters, so we’ll be there in a flash!
Baboom! Here we are at Los Jimadores! A lot of people remember this building as the old Pepe Taco, which I think was Peoria’s first Mexican restaurant. Los Jimadores moved in after they closed and they’ve kept the Mexican spirit alive with a vibrant restaurant and wonderful food and drinks.
As I walked in I ran into the owner of Los Jimadores, Eduardo! He’s such a nice guy and can often be seen serenading diners who have a birthday with his guitar and sombrero!
I came in the middle of the afternoon, so I have the bar all to myself! As I looked at the mini keg of tequila, Eduardo must have read my mind because he mixed me up one of their giganzo frozen margaritas! What a great looking drink, and it tastes even better than it looks!
Next he brought out some complimentary chips and salsa which I can never look at without thinking of this scene from a Seinfeld episode.
Okay, time to order and look at all the steak dinner selections, I told you there was a lot to choose from! I decided to go with a two-course steak dinner, so I ordered a steak taco and the Steak Texano which is one of the T-Bone selections on them menu.
While dinner is being prepared I’ll take some photos of the restaurant and we’ll start where I’m sitting, the bar. Margarita glasses hang overhead while Eduardo’s guitar hangs on the left wall. There’s the back of the bar and some of the different tequila offerings. There’s two beers on tap: Bud LIght and Dos Equis.
The main dining room is spacious with tables down the middle and large wooden booths lining each wall. Every table has its own wooden condiment bucket with three types of hot sauce and none of them are Frank’s Red Hot! I love that!
All of the artwork on the walls and tables in here is one-of-a-kind, hand-painted original art. It’s really beautiful and the art adds to the lively atmosphere of the restaurant!
There’s a room off to the side with more tables and art and the cashier station is up in front. Viva Mexico!
As I made my way back to my seat at the bar I found that the first course in my two-course steak dinner had arrived: A steak taco. I’ve eaten here at Los Jimadores many times, but I’ve never had the steak taco and while I knew it would be good, it was absolutely delicious! The steak was tender and nicely seasoned with just a little bit of a spicy kick, it was really savory and tasty. The lettuce was crisp and the tomatoes and cheese added a nice layer of flavor to the taco. The steak taco was wrapped up in a warm, soft tortilla and I really enjoyed it! This will be a tough act to follow!
Just as I finished that delicious steak taco, David showed up with my T-Bone steak dinner and it looks incredible! There’s a skewer of seafood, onions, peppers and pineapple on top of the steak and it comes with salad and french fries (of course I told them to hold the beans!)
I tried a shrimp off of the skewer to start this meal off and it was really tasty! But we’re not doing seven months of seafood, so let’s try out the steak!
It looks fabulous! Their T-Bones are fourteen ounces, sliced thin and cooked to perfection, let’s dig in!
The steak is really juicy and flavorful and has a hint of Mexican seasoning which gives it a unique and delicious flavor. I had a chunk of crabmeat off of the skewer in between steak bites and realized that this is their version of surf and turf! Very nice!
Well, not much left of that, it was a delicious dinner and wonderfully prepared, now time for dessert...
Which is the rest of my giganzo margarita! You have to drink these slow to avoid brain-freeze! Thanks to Eduardo and David for a wonderful two-course steak dinner at Los Jimadores! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
Steak Rating
Three and a Half Elsie The Cows—The T-Bone steak dinner was delicious, but I have to confess I liked the steak taco the best! Great food at Los Jimadores and it’s one of the friendliest restaurants in town!
