Today is not only the 23rd week in our year-long, “A Year In The LIfe Of A Sandwich,” MBIP sandwich tour, it’s also voting day. Yeah, this is finally the day that we decide between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to see who our next president is going to be. Since today is both voting day and our weekly sandwich post, I thought it would be fun to combine the two and have a sandwich election day here and Pete Clarno, who owns No Wake Zone Bar & Grill said he’d help me out. He and his kitchen crew have designed two sandwiches they feel somewhat mirror the candidates as far as food goes and we’ll be sampling those today and you can vote as to which sandwich you think should win this Presidential Sandwich Race here on MBIP! I’ll explain more later, but right now we have to get over to No Wake Zone!
Well, that was fast! Here we is!
As you can see as we walk the plank, it’s MBIP Sandwich Voting Day and the excitement is really building now! And here we are inside of No Wake Zone! I’m here towards the end of the evening, but there’s a crew of people down at the end of the bar, so let’s go say hello!
At the top is Kathy and Kathi, below them is Larry and Lynn and there’s the owners of the joint, Linda and Pete! And last, but certainly not least, there’s Char with an ice cold beer to start off this election evening! Great to see everyone! Pete and Linda told me that the sandwiches were a big hit today and two fresh platters are being prepared right now, so while we wait, we’ll take a few photos around No Wake Zone and put the MBIP Camera to good use!
Here’s some different angles of the No Wake Zone bar and the lit up inventory of bottles behind it!
That’s the MBIP corner of the ceiling up there with the 4th anniversary gifts I presented them a few months ago and the MBIP dollar off to the side. And below is the obligatory half a dozen beers on tap shot.
I’ve always loved this Stumpy Pete’s House of Ham poster, but I just realized on my last trip in here that Stumpy Pete is actually serving up his own severed leg! I love this guy!
As you can see from the board, there’s different specials every night of the week including the popular Tuesday Night Fried Chicken Special and the Thursday Night Cash Giveaway!
It’s hard to believe that it’s the second week of November and it’s still nice enough to go outside on the beer deck out in front of NWZ that faces Galena Road and the Illinois RIver. I’m guessing his is my last comfortable time out here till next springtime, we’ll have to see about this!
Meanwhile, back at the bar...
It’s sandwich time! Each one of these baskets that head chef, Willy has prepared is filled with sandwiches designated for each Presidential Candidate. We’ll take a look at them right now!
First up is, “The Hillary.” Pete and his crew prepared a fried bologna sandwich to represent Hillary Clinton. The bologna is not only there for reasons that her and every politician is full of that meat product, but a fried bologna sandwich is the Arkansas state sandwich.
The Hillary is made with a quarter inch slab of fresh bologna, melted Colby cheese, spicy mustard and topped with a fresh tomato slice. The bun is buttered and toasted and this sandwich looks great! I haven’t had a fried bologna sandwich in years and this looks so tasty! Okay, before we sample this one, let’s take a look at the other sandwich on today’s ticket...
“The Donald.” For this sandwich selection Pete and the crew chose a ham and cheese sandwich. I think we all can agree after this year that Donald Trump is certainly equal parts ham and cheese!
This sandwich is made with fresh ham, Swiss cheese and a special sauce made of poppy seed, mustard, butter and Worcestershire sauce. This certainly looks like it has a bigly taste going on!
Here we all are sampling the sandwiches. I have to say as opposed to the human presidential race, I’m loving both of these choices! They are really tasty slider style sandwiches and Pete has been serving them all day and people were voting on their favorite sandwiches and those votes have been tallied up. You can vote for the sandwich you think looks the best below in the comments section. The winner will be announced tomorrow!
Okay, the basket’s are empty, the sandwiches are all gone and now it’s time to vote for the No Wake Zone 2016 Presidential Sandwich! You can vote below (if you don't want to leave your name, just put, "Anon" as your name, and PLEASE: NO political chatter! Hail to the Kaiser Chiefs...or...whatever. We’ll announce the winner tomorrow! In the meantime, tonight is the Tuesday Night Fried Chicken special at No Wake Zone and there’s also trivia tonight there as well, the fun never ends! We’ll see you tomorrow!
Sandwich Rating (For The Hillary)
Three And A Half Dagwood Bumsteads—I chose the Hillary because I haven’t had a fried bologna sandwich in years and this one tasted so delicious! The bologna was tasty and the Colby cheese and mustard were the perfect compliment for the sandwich. And the bun was a big surprise, it was buttered, toasted and really added a nice touch to the sandwich! Choose which sandwich you’d like to see at No Wake Zone by voting in the comments below or over at the MBIP facecrack page. And remember, this isn’t based on politics, but on which sandwich you think looks the tastiest!
