The Captain Jinks show is certainly a big part of Peoria’s past with a diverse section of people that grew up watching that TV show in the afternoon. It was live TV, there was on-going games and characters, an in-studio audience and most importantly of all, there was Captain Jinks and Salty Sam. A classic comedy duo with Captain Jinks being the somewhat unhinged funny, off the wall guy and Salty Sam the laughing along, more even-keeled straight man. Like all live TV, there was a sense of danger to it and it was rumored that every once in a while the good Captain had a little liquid comedy fuel before the cameras started rolling. We’ve had a half a dozen posts devoted to Captain Jinks and Salty Sam in the last three and a half years that we’ve been doing MBIP and here’s links to all of those posts below!

#CaptainsKids—November 14, 2013
This was originally kind of a quickity-blickity blog by me and I honestly didn’t think I’d get much of a response to it. I had put up a picture of Captain Jinks and Salty Sam standing with a group of kids and Marianne Katus Kaak left a comment asking if these kids would come forward and identify themselves. That started me obsessing and wondering about who those kids were and what they were doing these days, if they were even still alive, so I put up this post asking if anyone knew about them to let me know. I really didn’t expect to get much of a response from it, scroll down to the next entry to see what a surprise I got!

#CaptainsKids—PartII—November 21, 2013
After I put up the Captain’s Kids post, I didn’t think I’d get a response, but I thought it would be worth a try and truth be told, it was an easy post for me to put up that day and I was able to take a little vacation day from the blog! So imagine my surprise when the next morning I got an email from one of the kids in the picture! It was crazy and I went and met him and got an update on the other “Captain’s Kids” in the picture. This is one of my personal favorite MBIP posts of all time!

Peoria TV Rerun: The Captain Jinks Show By Bob Gordon—December 22, 2012
I started the MBIP blog on December 10th, 2012 and I got a group of friends who were writers together and asked them if they’d like to contribute on the weekends. One of them was Bob Gordon and he wrote the very first post about the Captain Jinks Show for the blog over three years ago.

Peoria, I Hardly Knew Ye...By Jaws The Cabbie—December 30,2012
Jaws the Cabbie was another weekend contributor and he also touched upon some Captain Jinks memories in his very first post a week after Bob’s ran. He also wrote about Milton Budd’s “Nightmare Theater” TV show within this post.

Joe The Art Guy—July 21, 2016
The Captain Jinks show had recurring characters on the program and one of them was an artist known as Bosun Joe. Today he’s known as “Joe The Art Guy,” and I went and met with him last summer and had a fun time and he drew a caricature of myself and Adam Duvall who came along for the ride...well, actually he drove, anyway, this was a fun post!
