Okay, time for our weekly Sunday Snapshot and a few tidbits about what’s coming up next week. Last Friday I visited the Blue Duck BBQ restaurant on Water Street and had a great time! It was packed as usual, but the owner, Kavan Shay took a few moments out of his busy schedule to chat and to cook us up some crazy-great tasting chicken wings. Here’s this week’s snapshot of Kavan at a booth at Blue Duck BBQ.
Kavan’s an interesting guy to talk to. He’s just 27-years old and he’s created a brand new hotspot here in downtown Peoria on Water Street. Blue Duck BBQ is pretty much jammed every night due to the smoky creations he’s created in here. There’s Brisket, Pulled Pork, St. Louis Ribs and all the other BBQ star attractions along with such unique menu items as Asian Tacos, a Barbecued Baked Potato and a Vietnamese-styled barbecue Banh Mi sandwich.
Kavan got into the restaurant business in a sideways kind of motion, he started out his career as a financial analyst for an intellectual property consulting company in Chicago. He then moved on to being a commercial real estate consultant in the Windy City. All the time while Kavan was working these high-flying corporate jobs he was cooking as a hobby and he eventually realized that food was his passion and a path he wanted to pursue in his life. He decided to shift from the financial world to pursue the smoky world of BBQ and opened up Blue Duck BBQ last year on Water Street in downtown Peoria. All the recipes on the menu are his creations and I’ve sampled a few of them and they are out of this world tasty. If you haven’t stopped by Blue Duck yet, you should stop by and try out some of the smoky goodness that’s going on inside of there.
Below are the same four stupid-ass questions we ask every Sunday Snapshot victim every week:
What’s your favorite Sunday dinner?
Sushi, salads, pasta...anything that’s not cooked for 14 hours!
Name your favorite Sunday night TV show, past or present...or both?
Curb Your Enthusiasm. I love Larry David!
What time do you get up on Sunday?
That depends on if I’m golfing or not!
What’s a perfect Sunday afternoon or evening for you?
Golfing with my dad, after that a long walk with the dog, later a long nap and then spending some time with my lady friend.
Thanks to Kavan for hanging out and you can see more of him and the staff and crowd at Blue Duck BBQ this Tuesday as we rate the chicken wings there. Tomorrow at MBIP check it out as we had a great Saturday night dinner at Hearth in Peoria Heights and then had a few lively after-dinner drinks with old and new friends at the Navy-Marine Club. Plus there’s also going to be a final stop and wine-spitting at Julie’s Corner Store before it closes—yes, it’s closing, you didn’t know? Well stay tuned to see some pictures of that and there’s more adventures as well that I haven't thought of yet. So stay tuned and we’ll see you all tomorrow!
