Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know we were doing twelve weeks of chicken wings and now we’re into week number thirteen, but this is a bonus week, so just get your panties out of a bundle and settle down already! MBIP pal, Wheelman and Contributing Writer, Scott Turley (who accompanied me on many of these winged journeys) told me he has a pretty tasty wing recipe and he’s also told me numerous times that he makes the best onion rings in the world. Well today we’re going to find out if these culinary boasts are true, because he’s invited us to his house in Morton for a wings and rings party! Sounds good to me, but since he’s cooking he can’t drive...so we need to find a Wheelman for this trip to Morton...
And here he is, it’s my dad, Gerry behind the wheel and the prettiest woman in the world in the backseat, my mom Anne! Alright, onward to Morton we ride in the MBIP Parent-Mobile!
Here we are at Oak Lawn Estates the mobile home park where Scott and his wife Moonbaby live. The park is 50 years old, Happy Anniversary, Oak Lawn Estates! Get ready to start getting junk mail from AARP soon!
According to Scott’s directions his place is right down the road here...
And here we are! Wow, nice place! I think I see some activity up there on the porch, let’s go take a look...
Check it out, two pretty women on a porch! I love it when this happens! To the far right is Moonbaby and to the left is Moonbaby and Scott's daughter, Amber. Not too hard to tell that these two are mother and daughter!
And here’s Amber with her husband, Darren. And coming up the stairs is...
Scott’s brother, Jerry! We met Jerry on our pizza tour when we were at Lucca Grill in Bloomington. Great to see Jerry again, but where the hell is Scott?
There he is in the back with the grills and check out what’s cooking back here...
Chicken wings! They look and smell fabulous!
Holy screaming shitballs! Scott went all out for this party! That’s got to be at least two ounces of blow over here! Okay, let’s party like it’s 1982!
Right before I Hoovered up these lines, Scott informed me that this powder wasn’t for snorting, it’s for...
The onion rings!
And here’s Scott shaking the onions up in his specially seasoned flour. He suggested I cue up this song for these photos so here you go! Shake it up!
Beneath the bubbles the onion rings are frying up and Scott said they cook fast...
And he’s right, here they are on a platter and they look golden and unbelievable!
Right before we went inside I took this photo and realized that Jerry is the only Turley that wears shoes!
Here’s the table and the wings and rings, okay, I’m officially starvin’ like you know who over here!
Amber’s in charge of the salad and it looks colorful and delicious. She made the dressing herself, no bottled crap for the Turley’s!
Darren, Jerry and Moonbaby are waiting in the wings...pun fully intended. Okay, time to sit down and enjoy this wings and rings feast!
Amber, Darren, Jerry and I are seated at the main table...
And Moonbaby and Scott are up here at the kitchen bar. Scott’s trying to inhale a napkin...showoff!
Wow, the wings and rings look wonderful, looks like Scott’s boasts weren’t hollow after all. We’ll let them sit here for a moment to begin that all-important cooling process where we can...
Have another beer!
These onion rings are the best I’ve ever had anywhere in my life! They’re light, flaky, not greasy at all and that cocaine seasoned powder gives the rings a great flavor! They are so tasty!
And the chicken wings are to die for as well! Scott used his own homemade barbecue sauce on them and he slow-cooked the wings and the smoky/spicy flavor goes all the way through the wings. Great job, Scott, the wings and rings are definitely a highlight of the MBIP Chicken Wing Tour!
Time for the weekly bones and napkin shot!
After the wings and rings feast, Moonbaby pointed out a picture on the refrigerator...
It’s Scott and his three brothers. There’s Scott in the lower left, he’s the baby of the family. Okay, all together now: Aaawwwwww!
Scott said he wanted to show me his favorite room in the Turley home...
He told me that this is his own personal mancave in the back of the home!
I love the signs on the wall and check out the Red Ryder sign on the lower right side of the wall. Scott’s not only got the sign...
He’s got the Red Ryder gun! He’s going to put someone’s eye out with that thing I tell ya!
Scott Turley Birthday flashback alert! And check out that autographed Monkees picture back there, very cool!
Back on the front porch, Jerry and I engaged in a dueling photo moment!
Here’s Scott and Amber relaxing after the wings and rings feast!
And I had to get another official patent-pending Amber and Marty photo! Now that I’ve met Scott’s daughter Amber, this makes three friends of mine named, Amber. Check out the other two here. Love the Ambers!
Scott gave me a ride home and on the way, he wanted to stop at his favorite dive bar in Morton, The Office Tap. We went in and I thought the bartender looked familiar as we ordered a beer. Then I told her about the MBIP blog and gave her a card, she looked at the card and then back at me and said, “Oh my God, I was at a party at your apartment years ago with Bloody Mess!” The bartender’s name is Lisa and she used to be in a band called Safe Sex and Bloody wrote about them in an issue of POP magazine. Whenever an issue would come out, I’d have a party at my apartment and I remember Lisa being there with Bloody! And now over twenty years later we meet again, how crazy is that? Pictured above is Lisa and I at The Office Tap and the POP article is pictured below. That’s Lisa over there to the right in the picture in the article. We’ll be coming back here this Thursday for our weekly bar post, so stay tuned for that! Great to see Lisa again and mucho thanks to the entire Turley clan for a super-fun day of tasty wings and rings! It was a blast!
Chicken Wing Rating
Four Wings guitar picks—Some of the best wings on the tour for sure! And the onion rings were sensational and absolutely the best I’ve ever had in my entire life! Thanks again to Scott and Moonbaby for a really fun and tasty afternoon!
