For the last two years I’ve gotten an annual shoeshine at George’s Shoeshine and Hatters World Headquarters downtown.
And from the looks of these boots, it’s time to go visit George and get the yearly shoeshine. To the MBIP Mobile!
Off we go, the snow outside is about gone, but it’s freezing here. The high today is going to be seven degrees. Have I mentioned that I fucking hate winter? Oh, good.
George’s Shoeshine is located in the Central building here on the corner of Main and Adams.
Here’s the front window...it’s freezing as fuck-all out here, let’s get inside before my camera lens cracks from the cold.
The 68 on the door signifies how many years George has been in business.
There’s George, shining away.
This customer is Philip, who's the Race Director for Steamboat Classics. Philip remembered me from POP magazine which is always nice and we have a friend in common which means I have to cue this up, sorry about that!
There's tons of photos in here from George's past and present, let's take a look at a few.
Here's some newspaper articles featuring George and his shoeshine shop.
This is a photo of George and Harry Belafonte who recently stopped by for a shine when he was in town.
A lot of the photos I have no idea who or what they are, but I really enjoy looking at them.
Here's a photo of President Obama back when he was on the campaign trail getting a shine from George.
A classic shot of an autographed photo of John Williams and Dan Diorio back when the two of them were hosting a radio show I used to appear on from time to time. Memories...
Here's John interviewing George.
George took a break from shining Philip's shoes to show me one of his favorite photos...
It's a photo of him visiting the White House and being with Joe Biden. Clockwise from left is: George, Joe Biden, George's sister, Ray Lahood, Joe Biden's sister and George's brother.
Okay, Philip's shoes are all done and looking brand new...
Time for me to step up to the chair...
And get these shoes a badly needed shine! When the day comes that George can't fix them, I'll finally get some new boots. But I have faith he'll get them looking like new today.
And here we go, watch as George gets these boots back to shape.
Magic!
Thanks, George! See you in a year and we'll see you all tomorrow!
