Last month I started yet another series here on MBIP (like we need another one, but what are you going to do?) where I’m going to go out once a month and see some live music. We started it out last month at Sky Harbor enjoying the wonderful music and songs from Shannon Moore Shepherd. Tonight we’re going to see a five piece band at Peoria Pizza Works called Lark’s Tongue. So let’s go and see the show, Kokomo Joe!
Here we are at Peoria Pizza Works. This place has been a great venue for live music since the ‘70’s. I’ve seen lots of shows here. And I’ve also eaten a lot of pizza here too! It’s delicious!
It’s always nice and dark in here. It’s late, so all of the front dining tables are empty but...
There’s a decent crowd up here at the bar. Let’s belly up to it and get a beer!
And here’s Diana serving that beer up! We met Diana way back in the third week of the MBIP Year of PIzza Tour. Great to see her again!
Let’s check out the middle room over here, I see a couple of familiar faces over there...
It’s Jon Wright and Mae Gilliland over at this table. Jon plays keyboards in Lark’s Tongue and he’s the one who invited me to the show. Jon is also the Managing Editor of Peoria Magazines/CIBP and he’s working on an article about past publications from Peoria and I’m going to be featured in the article! More on that as it develops! Mae is the co-owner of Sheared Edge and is an advocate for the arts in Central Illinois. Great to see Jon and meet Mae! That’s what’s fun about these live shows, you not only get to see great, live, local music, you get to meet other people into the music scene here in Peoria. Below are just a few of the people I met last night!
Clockwise from top left: Becca, Chris and Kayla, Jim and Brian and Kelli. Chris plays guitar and sings in Lark’s Tongue and both he and Kayla both work at Trefzger’s Bakery and I met them when I did this post: Trefzger’s Bakery—The Sweetest Thing.
More people I met last night! Clockwise from top left (again): Ben and Darren, Hannah, Skyler and the Indian that’s been in Peoria Pizza Works forever! Skyler is a photographer and hs an art/video installation coming up on November 28th called: “Rest Your Heads.” There’s no online information about it, which is kind of refreshing, but there’s going to be an 18 minute guitar solo and a bathtub of ice. It sounds intriguing and it happens at 639 W. Main, Apartment 3. I may just stop by!
Up at the front of the room are merch tables for the bands playing tonight.
Here’s Jon at Lark’s Tongue merch table, let’s see what they’ve got up here.
There’s stickers, t-shirts, cassettes and vinyl LP’s. If you weren’t at the show last night, you can check out their albums here and they’re also available at Younger Than Yesterday.
I went and had a beer and I think it’s just about showtime...
Ladies and gentlemen...Lark’s Tongue!
Chris: Guitar and vocals...
Jeff: Guitar and vocals...
Nate: Bass...
Jon: Keyboards...
Andrew: Drums. The band plays all original material and it’s melodic, dense, trippy, trancey and orchestral all at the same time. Their influences include: Hawkwind, Codeine, Swervedriver, Pink Floyd, Jesu, The Verve, Hum and Uriah Heep. Those bands are influences, but Lark’s Tongue definitely have their own, unique signature sound.
You can check them out on their facecrack page right here.
As you can see, the crowd is really into the band and the molten, trippy saturated sound appears to have hypnotized some of them!
There’s a wide array of pedals and effects that Chris puts into good use during the songs.
Lark’s Tongue have been playing for about five years now and have done national tours as well as lots of shows in the Central Illinois area. You can check out their past shows right here.
They also have their own record label, Bird Dialect and here’s a link to learn more about that.
That was great show! If you haven’t seen Lark’s Tongue, follow the facecrack page and check them out at the next show! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
