There’s been many requests for me to go to Larry’s Driftwood Pizza in Creve Coeur. And as I’ve said before, we happily take requests here at MBIP, so Larry’s is the stop this week as we begin pizza pie journey number sixteen. Hey...do you hear something?
It’s someone knocking on the MBIP Headquareters door...well now, this is quite the Dave Edmunds moment, isn’t it?
It’s the official MBIP Roadmaster, Scott Turley, who magically shows up whenever there’s a road trip looming and he generously offers to drive.
After a quick beer, we’re off and rolling...
Rolling, rolling towards the town of Creve Coeur. Goddamn it’s bright out here, I really need to get some prescription sunglasses!
Signpost ahead...
Larry’s Driftwood Pizza! Time for this pizza expedition to begin!
Let's go in and see what's shaking at Larry's...
Uh oh, a bulletin board...this can only mean one thing...
Time for another edition of Dueling Business Cards between MBIP and ASDC (All Smiles Dental Care.) And it looks like ASDC wins this edition, coming out on top with two cards to our one. Enjoy your win, ASDC, for I've just placed an order for two kilos of business cards! I better order some thumbtacks too. Okay, back to the Year of Pizza, already in progress.
Let's get inside, I'm thirsty, hungry and I've lost Scott...hopefully he's inside.
Wow, there's a big crowd in here for a Sunday afternoon! The bar's over to the left, let's go see if we can snag a seat.
Ha! There's Scott, he doesn't waste any time and check it out, he's already drained half a beer at the bar. This guy doesn't fuck around, time to get a beer and catch up!
And here's the guy who's going to help me catch up to Scott in the suds department, Tony, the friendly bartender on duty. Tony is one of the people who suggested I stop out at Larry's via the MBIIP facecrack page. Tony not only delivered a beer, but some sad news. It seems that the owner of this establishment, Larry Petree passed away a couple weeks ago. You can read his obituary here and we send out our thoughts and condolences to his family. R.I.P. Larry.
This is our waitress, Monica who was a little camera shy and only agreed to pose if Scott would too, so here they are. Monica and everyone at Larry's is really friendly and fun, it's a great place.
Here's Skip and Don at the bar getting some takeout pies. They told me they've been getting pizza's here for years. Skip lives in Chicago and comes back for the pizza. Now I'm really getting hungry!
Here's the half dozen beers on tap in the middle of the bar.
As you can see from the giant menu looming overhead, they only do pizza in here. No chicken wings, no cheese sticks, just pizza. I like that!
Monica introduced me to Dave and Richard who are regulars in here and said this is the best pizza around the area. Okay, now I'm officially starvin' like Marvin over here!
Okay, Scott and I have placed our orders and they said I could go back into the kitchen and watch as the pies are made, very cool!
This is Michael who's going to be cooking the pies and as you can see, he's wasting no time. Just like a lottery winner, he's rolling in dough...sorry about that!
Michael told me that the sauce, the dough and pretty much everything is made fresh daily here at Larry's. Looking good so far!
The sausage is really ground fine here and as you can see, they cover the pie with it.
Next comes slices of cheese and pepperoni on mine.
Michael adds some green pepper and spices as finishing touches...
And it's into the oven they go! I can't wait to see the finished results.
Meanwhile back at the bar, the condiment tray is brought out along with the hot sauces. Of course there's the ever-present Frank's Hot Sauce along with a bottle of Sriracha hot sauce.
And here we go with the pizzas of this week presented at the bar!
I got the Meat Eaters pizza which is sausage, pepperoni, green peppers and onions.
Scott got the Supreme, which is sausage, green pepper, onions and mushrooms. Both of the pies look and smell fantastic!
This may just be the best thin crust so far. The toppings and sauce are really tasty and the crust is is thin, but has some texture and taste to it. This is really great pizza!
I should've stopped at half a pie, but I couldn't stop eating it, it was that good!
Okay, time for the next day cold pizza challenge...and yes, that's the same Red Stripe from last week.
It's delicious! Thanks to everyone at Larry's for great hospitality and pizza and to MBIP Roadmaster, Scott for driving! We'll see you all tomorrow!
