Live from Peoria, Illinois, it’s Saturday Night Cheeseburger starring this week’s host, Last Chance Bar and Grill and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome this week’s host, which is handily located nearby MBIP Headquarters, Last Chance Bar and Grill!
We're off on yet another Saturday night adventure. And check it out, unlike Sammy Hagar, I can drive 55!
Here we are, last year I said this place has kind of a roadhouse look to it from the outside and a year later the look has not changed.
Let's go in and get this show off the road and into a bar stool.
Most of the crowd in here is down at that end of the bar...
So I'm going to sit down here where there's plenty of seats and there's also...
Pretty bartender Sam on duty! She was here last year and remembered me. It was Sam's first night back after a vacation in Colorado, so she was well rested. It was great to see her again, she's a cool person and a great bartender.
Here's my view of the back of the bar from where I've settled in for the night.
Just a few minutes after I had settled in, this gentleman sat down and bought me a beer. His name is Ryan and he follows the MBIP blog and sent me a message asking where I was going tonight and I told him and here he is! Ryan is back in Peoria visiting friends and family, he grew up here but now lives in South Carolina with his wife and three sons. We had a nice chat about Peoria and Peoria bars and he made a suggestion about a bar which I will indeed follow up on soon. Stay tuned for that. It was great to meet Ryan, that's one of the things I love about doing this blog is meeting people and making new friends.
The condiment bucket is placed in front of me. I phoned my order in because I knew the kitchen would be closing soon, so the food is going to come quicker than usual tonight. Hey, check out the hot sauce, Cajun Chef, a nice change from the ever-present Frank's hot sauce that usually shows up.
Speaking of food, here it is in all its glory!
I got the Roadhouse Chicken Sandwich. It's a chicken breast topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce and a heaping pile of homemade onion strings. As you can see, I added a little mustard and pepper. On the side I got an order of Cheesy Taters which are deep friend Tater Tots stuffed with cheese. Everything looks great!
Ryan snapped a photo of me wolfing the sandwich down.
The sandwich was unbelievably tasty, but a little hard to hold because it's so huge! It was a great meal and you can read more about it in the review below.
I thought I'd go back to the kitchen and thank the chef who prepared the meal.
Here's the two people that prepared the meal, Candy and Mike. Candy and Mike are a husband and wife cooking duo and Mike remembered me from last year and said he still had the MBIP card in his wallet. Very cool!
I think I see a couple familiar faces in the crowd over there...
Sure enough it's my old pal, Regis Cavender and his lovely wife, Val! Regis is known around the Peoria area for inventing the ATM-O-Matic, which is a portable ATM/Wallet device that you can put in the trunk of your car. It was great to see both of them!
Let's go see what's happening in the back room tonight.
Lots of pool playing and fun and merriment happening back here. And I think I see yet another familiar face back there in the corner bar...
It's Angie, the pretty and friendly bartender who was working back here last year and she remembered me too. This night has turned into quite a reunion from last year!
Here's the weekly lunch specials, you can only get Meatloaf on Thursdays, oh well, one out of five ain't bad!
Suddenly...straws! But I don't do cocaine anymore so they're of no use to me anymore, so let's just keep moving along.
Meanwhile, back at the bar, Sam's busy and is probably wishing she was back in Colorado on vacation!
Greg was enjoying a beer at the bar and I thought he looked familiar and it turns out that he and his wife were at Mike's Tavern the last day of the 365 Bar Crawl. You can see them in the pictures from the last post here. Great to see him again and catch up on things and of course you know that this means we have to cue up, "It's a Small World After All!"
I swear that this has to be the longest bar in Peoria!
On my way out I snapped a quick and fuzzy obligatory mirror shot. We'll see you all tomorrow!
My Meal
I got the Roadhouse Chicken sandwich and a side order of Cheese Taters and I think I chose wisely. The Roadhouse Chicken is a grilled (or you can get it fried) chicken breast and it’s topped with a tangy BBQ sauce, bacon, cheedar cheese and a heaping stack of their homemade onion strings. The sandwich is housed in a bakery fresh hamburger bun. This sandwich has a smorgasbord of tastes going on. The chicken breast itself is juicy and tasty and when you mix in the cheddar cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce and the onion strings it’s like an explosion of tastes going off in your mouth. The bacon and the onion strings really add a unique flavor to the sandwich and I wish I could describe it better, but all I can say is that it’s a taste sensation you need to try. The Cheese Taters were a taste treat too, basically they’re deep-friend Tater Tots stuffed with cheese. I think that’s all you need to know!
SNC Rating
Three Galloping Gourmets—It’s seriously one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had and I suggest you pair it up with an order of the Cheesy Taters.
