Live from Peoria, Illinois it’s Saturday Night with this week’s host, Sky Harbor, with special guest star, Amber and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome this week’s host, located deep in the heart of FRED, Sky Harbor!
We are off and running on this last Saturday night in 2014. My co-pilot tonight is my new Gumby that I got for Christmas from my niece Caylin. His head lights up when you press a button! Too cool!
Here we are at tonight's last Saturday Night adventure for 2014. I thought since it's the last night for the year we should pick an iconic Peoria restaurant and Sky Harbor certainly fills that requirement.
Let's go in and let the night begin!
Christmas is over, but the Poinsettia plants and the holiday wreaths in the front foyer remind us that the holiday season is still lingering with the New Year just a few days away.
There's my favorite spot at Sky Harbor, the bar! And I think I see a familiar face sitting there in the middle of it...
It's my friend, Amber! Amber has never been to Sky Harbor and when I invited her she said she'd get all dolled up for the occasion and did she ever! She looks gorgeous!
Tonight is turning into a parade of pretty ladies as Angela serves up a bottle of Budweiser. We met Angela when I came here with my parents back in October.
Here's Gumby, all excited at the bar. You have to excuse his excitement, three days earlier he had been trapped inside of a package for a few months until I unwrapped him.
This is the quartet of beers on tap, check out the third one from the left, it's a brew from the Peoria Brewing Company, those guys are everywhere these days!
Sky Harbor owner and local musician, Daryl Klusendorf stopped by and said hello. And Gumby? He's still excited! I think I need to get him a drink.
Desiree (there's supposed to be an accent mark over the last "e" of Desiree's name but I couldn't make sense of this, so let's just pretend like there's one there) and Maria were seated at a table behind us and Daryl posed for a photo with them. Maria happens to be the sister of MBIP pal, Mike Nellas who's appeared in more than a few MBIP posts, like this one when he was playing with The Brazillionaires at Noir. And of course now we must cue this up.
Jim Taylor was belting out tunes at the piano bar. Check out the Christmas Story lamp over to the left. It's fragile!
David and Mardy were enjoying the music at the piano bar. David's also a local musician and you can check out his website right here.
Turquoise colored leather banquettes and lit up photos and art line the walls in the restaurant.
I love the stone wall in the back room and the dark atmosphere of the whole place.
Staying true to the name Sky Harbor, a back-lit illustration of an airplane hangs from the ceiling back here.
Here's a shot from the back room.
Amber and I both agreed that one of our favorite things in here is the sparkly ceiling that's lit up by the swinging gypsy-like red chandeliers hanging underneath it.
Meanwhile back at the bar, the Budweiser trolley continues to move in a circular fashion.
Amber fastened a cocktail sword to Gumby and he's speared an ASDC business card. They win this round of the MBIP-ASDC business card duel, but tomorrow is another day and perhaps another battle! Stay tuned!
Dinner is served! Here's Angela with a platter of dishes including...
Chicken wings...
Potato skins...
Frog legs with butter and a cocktail sauce...
And last but not least a shrimp cocktail. Quite a feast, time to dig in!
Everything was great as always here, and you can read more about the meal in the review below, but the surprise hit of the evening were the potato skins. They were crispy, loaded with cheese and bacon and delicious!
Here's Amber enjoying the potato skins...
As I dig into a wing. It was a great meal!
After dinner Daryl joined Tim at the piano bar for a few tunes.
David was filming it and it may already be up on YouTube. I'd go look, but I'm still trying to figure out how to make a fucking accent mark!
Daryl's getting into the song but back at the bar...
I think Gumby's had a little too much to drink! We better get him home before he gets all Miley Cyrus on our ass with that wrecking ball beneath him! Thanks to Amber, Daryl, Angela and everybody at Sky Harbor for a fun last Saturday night in 2014! We'll see you all tomorrow!
Our Meal
Amber and I decided to try some of the items from the appetizer menu and ordered chicken wings, a shrimp cocktail and the potato skins. From the entree menu we decided to get the frog legs because Amber had never had them. The food arrived and everything was cooked to perfection and very tasty.
Amber said the frog legs were kind of a cross between chicken and seafood and I agree. She said she was glad she ordered them but probably wouldn’t order them again for a while. The chicken wings were lightly breaded, juicy and had just a hint of spiciness coming through. The shrimp cocktail was shrimp, so naturally they were great, but the big surprise of the whole meal was the potato skins. These were the best potato skins ever! As opposed to most places, Sky Harbor really stays true to the title of “potato skins.” They take the skins from potatoes and cook them up to a nice crispy consistency and then generously pile on cheese and smoky bacon and the result is a savory and tasty treat. I highly recommend them if you’ve never tried them at Sky Harbor.
