Okay, once again it’s time to take this saucy tour on the road. Today we’re headed to Galesburg to try the pie at a place called, Budde’s Pizza & American Craft Beer Bar that was recommended on facecrack a while back. And when we take a road trip here we can be fairly certain of one thing...
There’s going to be a knock on the door here at MBIP World Headquarters...
And behind door number one will be MBIP Contributor, pal and Wheel Man, Scott Turley with his eyeballs safely hidden behind a pair of shades.
After a quick beer and planning session for today's pizza mission, we are off like a cool breeze with Scott steering the way towards our 37th pizza pie in Galesburg.
It's a grey day as we head out in the early evening...
And through the magic of these here interwebs, it's full-bore evening as we hit our destination in Galesburg, Budde's Pizza & American Craft Beer Bar.
Let's go in and see what's happening here in Galesburg on a Sunday evening.
It's really nice in here and if you look closely, you can see that Scott is two steps ahead of me and already has a beer at the bar. Time to catch up...
And here's that catch-up beer delivered by Mike, who's not only on bartending duty tonight, he owns the place along with his wife, Dianne. He said Dianne would be here in a few minutes, so in the meantime we'll take a little look around in here.
Here's the view of the lit up bottles and signage of the back of the bar from where we sit.
The center of the bar displays coolers of bottled craft beers and the biggest Pabst Blue Ribbon mirror I've ever seen.
And true to his word, Mike's wife Dianne showed up exactly three minutes after I took his photo. If only his name was Jack, they might be eligible for royalties from John Mellencamp.
Circular tables line the wall opposite the bar.
Mike and Dianne let me go behind the bar to take a shot of the taps they have...hey, who's that over there to the right in between the Newcastle and Pabst tap...
It's April, who's an artist that specializes in paintings and chalk art. Check out her work here and like her on facecrack over here.
They have lots of live music here on the weekends and every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday there's a lively open mic night here at Budde's. This is the stage at the front of the bar.
They've got a nice tin ceiling in here...
And in the front of the bar there's a vintage bike hanging underneath that ceiling.
There's also one in the back of the bar, which hovers close to....
Two foosball tables here in the back room of the bar. As you can see from the sign, Budde's just celebrated their 7th anniversary!
This is Budde's Beer Wall of six packs from the past. My how the beers fly by.
Here's a shot from the other end of the bar.
Meanwhile, back at the bar warm homemade dip and chips have arrived. I forgot to write the name of the dip down, but it's Dianne's recipe.
Wow, this is really good dip. The foundation is a cheese sauce with ground beef and other tasty ingredients. It's spicy and flavorful and the homemade chips are so good!
Dianne told us the pizza was just about ready so we asked for some hot sauce and check this out, eight different varieties and there's not a bottle of Frank's Hot Sauce in the group! I'm in heaven! The bottle in the center is their own hot sauce made on the premises, so I think I'll try that when the pizza arrives.
And here they are, this week's pizza pies served up by Dianne!
I got the Barbecue Pig Lovers pizza which is a pie topped with ham, sausage, bacon, mozzarella and cheddar cheese and diced green peppers with barbecue sauce instead of pizza sauce. It looks and smells fantastic!
Scott got a personal veggie pizza.
Two pieces of the pizza have been placed on the plate to begin the all important cooling process while I drink another beer.
This pizza is so tasty! They top this off with big chunks of ham, bacon and sausage and the cheddar and mozzarella ooze and mingle with the porky toppings nicely. The diced green peppers add a crunch and a nice veggie balance to the meaty mix. And the crust is really good. It's a medium crust, but it's light and flaky and has an almost biscuit-like quality to it. This is really good homemade pizza!
It's also very filling, especially after we pigged out on the dip before the pizza. Looks like we've got plenty of leftovers for...
The next day cold pizza challenge and yes, the MBIP craft beer corner of the fridge is still empty, maybe next week there will be a new six pack there, stay tuned!
It's delicious. Thanks to Scott for driving and to Mike and Dianne for a fun night and some great pizza at Budde's. We'll see you all tomorrow!
