Okay, last week we witnessed Meadow’s Avenue Tap laying waste to The Dream Hut from Bartonville with their killer Sunday chili dogs they serve up at their bar.
I got an email from Tony Moreschi, owner of Khaki Jack’s who suggested I visit the M & M Twistee Treat ice cream parlor in East Peoria for this week's edition of Peoria Hot Dog Wars. I checked it out and it’s right down the street from Carl’s Bakery and it’s really an interesting building. I hope Wendy Vee from Roadside Wonders is tuned in for this hot dog battle, it’s a place that’s right up her alley.
Okay, let’s motor on over to the M & M Twistee Treat!
Okay, we're going to East Peoria, which means we have to travel on the interstate, which I'm finally getting used to after not having driven on it for almost twenty years.
What I'm not used to is going over this bridge. I've always had a fear of driving over bridges and it seems to have magnified since I've moved back. I feel an anxiety attack coming on in about seven seconds...
Alright, through the miracle of the internets, you're spared a white knuckle drive across that stinking bridge with me traveling about 20 miles per hour and getting honked at and honked off at all the drivers on the road. Hey look, there's the big chicken in front of Carl's Bakery. The Twistee Treat is right down the road.
And here we are, how cool is this building?
There's a restaurant attached to the giant ice cream cone in the back.
And yes, they sell hot dogs, time to let the war games begin!
They have picnic benches for sitting outside and dining...
But I've always preferred to dine inside, let's go check it out.
It's very nice in here and there's plenty of places to sit. And check out the jukebox in the back, very cool!
There's the front counter, let's go up and order this week's hot dogs.
Carrie and Crystal teamed up to take my order. They're both very friendly and good sports about posing for the MBIP camera.
While they're getting the order ready, let's take a look at some of the pictures hanging up on the walls in here.
Elvis Presley was the King of rock 'n' roll...
Until these four lads from Liverpool knocked him off his crown. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Here's an article about Twistee Treat in the Peoria Journal Star.
And you gotta love any place that has a signed photo of Captain Jinks and Salty Sam!
Hey, hey, it's The Monkees! People say they monkey around.
Okay, let's go to our table and let this hot dog battle begin!
On the way to my table I happened upon Dale who was enjoying his lunch inside of Twistee Treat. It turns out Dale is Carrie's boyfriend.
Condiments!
And as I arrive at the table, the meal is all ready to go, let the hot dog battles begin!
Here's the two contenders for this week, a chili dog and a plain hot dog with mustard.
I thought I'd try the chili dog first.
It was okay, but the chili was a little on the bland side and this is just me being weird, but I didn't like the way the onions were chopped, they looked like ice on top of the dog and it kind of freaked me out a little bit.
For a palette cleanser between dogs, I got an order of fries. They were cooked to perfection, really crispy and tasty!
I also got a vanilla shake and it's one of the best milkshakes I've ever had! Check out the thickness as the straw stands straight up in the middle of the shake. Delicious!
Okay, time for the plain mustard dog. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't quite up to par with Meadows Avenue Tap's dogs.
All wars have casualties and today is no exception. The winner for this week is Meadows Avenue Tap. Thanks to Carrie and Crystal for the hospitality at Twistee Treat, it's a fun place and you should stop by when you get a chance. See you all tomorrow.
Peoria’s Hot Dog War Status
Meadows Avenue Tap once again emerges from the battle as weiner winners and they hold on to the best hot dog title in Peoria for this week. Check back next Tuesday to see if they can hang on to the crown for another week!
Hot Dog Rating For M & M Twistee Treat
Two Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles. Carrie told me that their specialty is their homemade tenderloin sandwich, so I need to return and try that out. The ice cream creations look amazing there as well. So if you’re hungry for a hot dog, I suggest you stop in to Meadows Avenue Tap, which is nearby, have one of their amazing chili dogs and then come to M & M Twisty Treat for dessert! Oh, what a diplomatic Master of War I am! Hot dog!
