Thanksgiving has always been the middle, red-haired stepchild of holidays—in between Halloween and Christmas. Caught in the middle of decorative holidays and becoming the launch pad of a holiday shopping weekend.
I've always enjoyed Thanksgiving, it once was a non-stress 4 day weekend, priming for Christmas or Santa parade downtown. Now it seems to be a contest of how early a business can open and how much money to make in a short period of time.
I've assmebled a photographic tribute of turkeys around and about Peoria in celebration of Thanksgiving to show that we here at MBIP still respect and observe this tryptophantastic holiday. For trivia buffs out there Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the turkey our national bird. So we could’ve been feasting on lean bald eagles instead of plump turkeys each year, if Benny boy had his way.
To kick off our tribute no turkey show could not start without this WKRP-TV classic episode:
As I said in the introduction, Thanksgiving is here which means another holiday photo post. Allowing Marty to have an occasional day off I have been assigned as the designated MBIB holiday staff photographer. I toured area neighborhoods searching for turkey decorations. They’re not as plentiful like Halloween or Christmas but I did find a few.
Going to the grocery store was fun looking for lost turkey gems. Nothing says "Happy Thanksgiving" better than "encased meat by-products" like turkey hot dogs or sausage.
Here’s a great idea for a "guys only" football frenzied Thanksgiving...bologna and TV dinners.
Even Junior and Fido get in on the turkey craze. Heck, Newman's Own looks good enough for human consumption!
After finishing my romp of grocery store turkey delicacies I recalled there are many more turkeys flying around us...
An 80's classic Garbage Pail Kids bubble gum card:
Here's a hot rod turkey:
The high school in Tremont are brave enough to use a turkey as a mascot:
Even John Lennon couldn't resist!
Here's where it all started:
"Goodfellas" movie fans need to watch this entire clip. Trust me it's hilarious, even folks who haven't seen the movis will appreciate this brief one minute plus clip:
After this turkey binge remember to leave room for one more turkey, a MBIB staff favorite!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
